Class Descriptions
Each individual progresses in the practice of Iyengar Yoga uniquely. These class descriptions are a general guide to help students find the classes best suited to their current yoga experience and personal circumstances.
Beginner / Level 1 : Basics
A series of classes taught in a progressive format. Ideal for new and beginning students, and for anyone who is not yet familiar with the scope of Iyengar Yoga practice. Students first learn the essentials of Iyengar Yoga through poses which develop balance, strength, and mobility. Relaxation poses and Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) are introduced and developed. After completing a Beginner and/or Level 1 series, students may be ready continue into Level 1+2 /Continuing and All Levels classes.
Level 1+2: Continuing
Level 1+2 is a “continuing class” where Level 1 + Level 2 students continue to develop skill and confidence in their foundational poses, while also working with more detailed instructions. Inversions and back extensions work are introduced and developed.
Level 2: Intermediate
Level 2 Students already have a strong foundation in Iyengar Yoga. Students are familiar with basic yoga poses and know, for the most part, how to work appropriately with the props to accommodate their circumstances. Inversions are regularly taught in these classes and an expanded repertoire of practices including back extensions and pranayama (breath practices) are developed. Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) and its variations are a consistent part of the practice at this level. Sirsasana is introduced.
Level 2+3: Intermediate / Experienced
Level 2+3 students have already developed a high level of insight into the practice of Iyengar Yoga through prolonged study and practice, and they have become confident and independent practitioners. Sirsasana (headstand) is a consistent element of the deepening work in these classes. A mature and cultivated personal practice is expected of those attending a dedicated Level 2+3 Class.
All Levels: Practice Essentials + Foundations
All level classes work with narrow scope of postures considered as essential practices for maintaining strength and flexibility.
Easy Pace: Gentle
An easy-paced class with a mild approach to deepening one’s yoga practice. These classes focus on a poses that improve mobility, balance, and concentration. Students must be able to get up and down from the floor. No previous experience is necessary.
